TEAM Philippines beat Malaysia, 9-5, in Round of 16 to barge into the quarterfinals Thursday of the PartyPoker.com World Cup of Pool in Newport, South Wales.

The Filipino pair of Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante, the top seeds in the tournament, had to work hard this time in ousting the Malaysian tandem of Parick Ooi Fook Yuen and Ibrahim Bin Amir.

Reyes and Bustamante opened their campaign with a lopsided 9-0 win over Malta, but had to dig deep into their bag of tricks as the Malaysian pair battle them on even terms in the early going.

Amir and Yuen, seeded 16th in the event, had their chances as they forced a 4-4 all, only to lose their touch and allow Reyes and Bustamante to pull ahead for good.

The Philippines faces the winner of the Czech Republic-Canada match in the quarterfinals.

US cue masters Earl Strickland and Rodney Morris also move into the quarterfinals following their 9-3 drubbing of England B composed of Steve Davis and Daryl Peach.

The Americans, seeded third, await the winner of the Russia-Hong Kong encounter.

The winner in the tournament will receive $60,000.

Reyes, called "The Magician", said he and Bustamante still have a lot of work to do for them to come out on top of the 32-nation field.

"It's hard to say if we will win the tournament but we can play well and if we make the final, maybe we can win it," Reyes said. (CRAM)
