'Anti-terror agent' expertise questioned

AN AVIATION security official questioned the expertise of Samson Macariola, an anti-terror agent who successfully sneaked in a bomb through the Davao International Airport security.

From what was gathered by Sun.Star, Macariola is a civil engineering graduate of Adamson University batch 1985. He is into guns and explosives and said to have even published a book about it.

Macariola is reportedly a former confidential agent of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and worked as a firearms and explosives instructor of the NBI Academy from 2002 to 2004.

But for Senior Superintendent Edwin Corvera, deputy director for administration of the Aviation Security Group, Macariola is a fake and his claims of a successful attempt to smuggle explosives into a plane was a hoax.

Corvera said the deed, as published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer last week never took place.

Corvera said Macariola, who claimed to have breached tight airport security, has dubious credentials as an anti-terrorism expert.

Macariola claims to be a consultant of City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, the presidential adviser on anti-terrorism.

Corvera said Macariola's expertise in firearms and explosives is doubtful, adding that Macariola had no record of having trained with the PNP Explosives and Ordnance Division.

Macariola was the resource person for a seminar on anti-terrorism at the Davao City Airport on August 14 and 15.

Duterte is said to have tapped Macariola's services due to his strong credentials.

The mayor is set to meet the press Wednesday night and is expected to defend Macariola from his detractors.

Duterte earlier said the anti-terrorism expert smuggled molding clay and not C4 into the plane.

Presidential Chief of Staff Mike Defensor said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will meet Macariola for his recommendations. The meeting will take place after the President's trip to Europe, Cuba and Hawaii. (BOT)
