City to export coco sugar

DAVAO City has the potential to become an exporter of coco sugar, an official of the Philippine Coconuts Authority (PCA) said.
During the Kapehan sa PIA Friday, Socorro Pueblo of the PCA said just like Cagayan de Oro City that has been starting to export coco sugar to Korea, Davao City will also become an exporter of coco sugar at the start of 2007 .
But Pueblo said there are still no willing takers who would like to venture in coco sugar since it is new in the market.
"Marami na ang mga interesado, but wala pang takers. Siguro by next year, meron ng mga takers," Pueblo said.
According to Pueblo, to invest in coco sugar costs only about P100,000 as starting capital.
Pueblo said Davao City has the capacity to produce enough coco sugar for export and potential market includes the United States and Europe.
Other coco sugar exporters that Davao will be competing with next year is Thailand and others countries in the South Pacific, she said.
Cocosugar is taken from freshly cut tuba and undergoes fermentation process. It is rich in fiber and other vitamins and minerals. It costs P130 to 150 per kilo compared to Moscovado brown sugar, which costs P30 to 38, Pueblo disclosed.
