Davao B, Alabang bets play to a 2-2 standoff By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
DAVAO City B held powerhouse Alabang-Muntinlupa U to a 2-2 standoff in the first round of the 2006 National Inter-cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championshiop at the Atrium of Gaisano Mall.
Carlo Doctolero and Bienvenido Tipay pulled off victories for Davao B in the middle boards to make up for the defeats of board one player Paolo Prado and board four bet Nofre Reyes.
Davao City A, powered by Grandmaster Mark Paragua, crushed lowly Holy Cross of Davao College Men, 4-0, to got off to a flying start even as defending champion Tagaytay was held to a 2-2 draw by Lanuza.
Prado fell to International Master Oliver Dimakiling, while Reyes got ambushed by Basilio Pandan Jr.
However, Doctolero and Tipay struck for the host team with victories over Hebry Lopez and Dino Ballecer, respectively, to tie the contest.
Paragua, with an ELO rating of 2398, crushed Mohammad Sacar to lead the Davao A onslaught. Also winning their matches were NM Kaharudin Tayuan, Perkins Bayron and Jenny Mayor.
