2 men sued for mauling man to death By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE City Prosecutor's Office recommended the filing of charges against two men accused of mauling another to death in Barangay Lamanan, Calinan, Davao City, this April.
Prosecutor Victoriano M. Bello Jr. recommended the filing of murder charges against Pardo Bando alias Andot, of legal age, and one Rowel Awe alias Longlong, both residents of Sitio Darila, Barangay Lamanan in Calinan.
The complaint was originally filed by Meriam Gocotano, mother of the victim named Reynante Gocotano, of Purok 2-B, Biao Joaquin, Calinan.
In his resolution, Bello said that probable cause exists to hold respondents for trial for the offense charged against them since the action was made with treachery.
Teofilo Jasmin, barangay police of Barangay Lamanan and a witness to the incident, executed an affidavit claiming that the incident happened at a basketball court just a few meters away from his house at around 5:30 p.m. on April 22.
Jasmin said he was on patrol at the basketball court when he saw Gocotano in an argument with the respondents over some amount Gocotano allegedly withdrew from the Dole banana plantation located in Libungan, Lamanan.
He later learned that Gocotano hired the respondents to work at the plantation. He added that the respondents are insisting that Gocotano give them their share amounting to P1,000.
Jasmin claimed he tried to settle the differences between the victim and the respondents, but the suspects picked up a piece of wood and jointly clubbed Gocotano hitting him in the head and on the different parts of his body.
He said he sought the help of Awe's uncle, Dario, who just lives nearby, but when they returned to the area, Bando and Awe have already left the place.
Meanwhile, Jasmin and Dario brought Gocotano to the Dr. Isaac Robillo Hospital in Calinan but the victim was later transferred to the Davao Medical Center (DMC) for the serious injuries he suffered.
On April 26, Gocotano died while undergoing treatment at the hospital's intensive care unit.
The respondents remain at large.
