It's a four-way logjam for lead
BARANGAY Alabang (Muntinlupa V) defeated overnight solo leader Madrid (Surigao del Sur), 3-1, to create a four-way logjam for the top spot after four rounds in the 2006 National Inter-cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship.
Alabang posted 3.5 points, the same tally thus far of defending champion Tagaytay, Cantilan (Surigao del Sur) and Quezon City.
A team backed up by no less than sportsman and Barangay chairman Victor Ulanday, the 2004 edition champion leaned on victories by IMs Darwin Laylo and Ronald Dableo, both official Philippine representatives in the forthcoming Doha Asian Games.
Laylo stunned IM Barlo Nadera, while Dableo beat NM Mirabeau Maga in the top board matches. Noel Dela Cruz also provided full point by demolishing Allan Cantonjos on board three.
Eden Diano, a former National Shell Youth Active chess finalist, saved the day for Madrid squad after crushing Rolenson Loyola to prevent a possible shut out loss.
"We hope both of our teams could book semifinal berths and eventually reach the finals and regain the title we once held. In spite of all trials and adversities that came to our chess teams, we continue to aim for the best," said team captain engineer Joel Hicap.
Earlier, Alabang chess team defeated RLA-Parang (Maguindanao) and QT Marketings (Malita B) in a similar 2.5-1.5 victories then held into a 2-2 stand-off against Cantilan (Surigao del Sur) which is funded by NCFP president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. late Thursday.
Tournament top seed Tagaytay City, funded by NCFP secretary-general and Tagaytay City mayor Abraham Tolentino Jr., nosed out Carrascal (Surigao del Sur), 3.5-0.5
GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., Edmungo Gatus and Allan Macala beat NM Emmanuel Senador, Marlon Ricarfort and Bengt Largo, respectively.
Surigao's board 2 player FIDE Master Adrian Ros Pacis settled for a truce with GM candidate Jayson Gonzales in 44 moves of a London System duel.
