Davao woodpushers fail
DAVAO City A's campaign in the 2006 National Inter-cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship came to end when it was forced to a 2-2 draw by Ecalante City (Negros Occidental) Saturday morning at the Atrium of Gaisano Mall.
Barangay Alabang (Muntinlupa V), PNP-Quezon City, Carrascal (Surigao del Sur) and defending champion Tagaytay took the first four slots in the elimination phase to advance to the semifinals.
Alabang, starring Asian 3.2a zonal champion and Grandmaster candidate Ronald Dableo, plays Tagaytay while Carrascal meets PNP-Quezon City in the semis.
Granmaster Mark Paragua again provided the spark for Davao A with a victory over NM Rodrigo Atotobu inm 28 moves of a Scoth Opening in the seventh round yesterday, while Jenny Mayor also won his match over Ted Ian Montoyo.
However, NM Kaharudin Tayuan and Arnel Aton lost their matches giving Davao A only 4.5 points for a share of the 5th spot.
But it's not all bad news for Paragua.
The 22-year-old Paragua will not go home empty handed as he bagged the gold for board one with 6.5 points behind six wins and a draw.
Alabang finished on top with 6.5 points, PNP-Quezon 6, Carrascal 5.5 and Tagaytay 5.
Dableo defeated NM Ronald Llavanes to lift his Barangay Alabang (Muntinlupa V") squad to a 2.5-1.5 points victory against powe house Quezon City.
Barangay Alabang is being backed by sportsman and Barangay Alabang chairman Victor Ulanday. (With a report from NM Marlon Bernardino)
