Carrascal wins Inter-cities chess By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
CARRASCAL, Surigao del Sur stunned Barangay Alabang in the two-game finals match to emerge the surprise winner Sunday in the 2006 National Inter-cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship a the Atrium of Gaisano Mall.
The Carrascal woodpushers, who reached the finals after beatingt PNP-Quezon City earlier, first downed Alabang in the first game at 2.5-1.5, then pulled off a 3-1 in the second to seal the championship and pocket the P1,000,000 winner's prize.
FIDE Master Adrian Ros Pacis and Bengt Largo delivered the crucial points for Carrascal, while top board player NM Emmanuel Senador and Marlon Ricafort chipped in a draw to checkmate Barangay Alabang in the all-important Game 2 that won it for the team.
No less than National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero "Butch" Pichay awarded the prizes to the winners during the closing rites late Sunday afternoon.
Pichay also distributed medals to the gold medalists from boards one to five in the event by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Philippines Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William "Butch" Ramirez Jr. and Gaisano Mall of Davao.
NM Senador, enlisted personnel of the Philippine Airforce under the wings of commanding general Jose Reyes, group commander AFSS6 Colonel Danilo B. Mendoza and 250 presidential air unit wing Colonel Oscar Rabena, held national Open champion IM Darwin Laylo into a draw after 32 moves of a Reti Opening on board 1.
FM Pacis, on the other hand, beat National Open runner-up IM Ronald Dableo after 33 moves of an English Opening on board 2.
Ricafort, stalwart of the Philippine Navy under the command of vice admiral Mateo M. Mayuga (AFP) settled for a truce with Noel Dela Cruz after 51 moves of a Sicilian Skirmish on board 3.
Largo, last minute player of four-man field Carrascal Chess squad who traveled all the way from Iligan City, beat Rolenson Loyola after 35 moves of French Defense on board 4.
Pichay, co-organizer with Misamis Oriental governor Oscar Moreno of the coming 2006 National Inter Provincial Chess Team Championships in Cagayan de Oro City in October, likewise donated P100,000 to the organizing committee of the National Inter-Cities Chess Team Championships in the closing rites.
Defending champion Tagaytay City, which is bankrolled by NCFP secretary-general and Tagaytay City mayor Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. finished third after beating Philippine National Police (PNP)-Quezon City, 4:0, 2.5:1.5.
Alabang, supported by sportsman and Barangay chairman Victor Ulanday, received P60,000 for placing second, while Tagaytay City pocketed P40,000 for taking third.
