Flavored banana chips offered in Davao schools By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE Department of Trade and Industry will offer flavored banana chips at various schools in Davao Region as a part of its Health Food Program.
The new innovation is specially made to satisfy one's cravings for banana chips that taste like cheese, barbeque, honey-dipped, trail mix (combination of banana chips, peanuts, green peas, raisins, and corn bits), and banana chips with sesame seeds.
Maharlikan Star Ventures, a small group of women being assisted by Baba's Foundation, is the one producing the flavored banana chips.
Tita Ecpal, executive director of Baba's Foundation, said that other seven flavors of banana chips are still under product development. Later on, these varieties will also be adopted by Maharlikan.
Marie Anne How, One Town One Product (Otop) champion of the DTI-Davao City Field Services Division, said banana chips, being the chosen Otop of the region have to be promoted in schools not just for economic, but also for health reasons.
She added that there are a number of health benefits that banana can give to the body.
Otop is a project of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo with DTI as the implementing agency.
Under the program, a local government unit focuses on the development of its most popular product.
On Friday, DTI will launch the flavored banana chips at Bernado D. Carpio National High School.
