Tuesday, October 03, 2006 SunRun launches fund drive for child cancer patients By Romeo F. Sabaldan
CHILDREN who are into a different battle outside of the playing field where they are suppose to spend life in early stages are getting the much needed boost for their recovery by the Davao Sunday Runners Club, Inc. (SunRun).
Davao City's longest running club will conduct the annual "Ultimate Challenge Finishers Marathon" in its 23rd year staging with a fund drive for the recovery of child cancer patients under the care of DMC-KYTHE Child Life Program.
Pronouncements made by medical experts have given us a ray of hope in these: Cancer is curable among children.
But we are going a step further or a run ahead of time with the launching recently of the fund drive by the compassionate members and board of trustees of SunRun.
The Sunday Runners want to give them more mileage in terms of health care and much needed medicines.
Ours is a race to have the "second wind" or the peak of the endurance as seasoned runners would want to call it. Theirs is a race against the life-threatening unwelcome disease.
Help at this time of great need is what they needed most. For the volunteers who console with them in their brave fight, for parents who have already spent everything and not knowing where to get the next dose of medicines for their suffering children.
A day before the Sunday Runners set out on another marathon run in preparation for December's "Ultimate Challenge" of 42.195 full marathon, we went to launch the fund drive and meet with the children in a get together they called Celebrate Life.
Some happy moments together of surviving another day, weeks... Although the pain of having to see these little children suffer with their ready smiles all the time is an inescapable expression among those who are willing to give them more mileage and ideally full recovery. Yes, we can.
Children are given more chances to recover from this most unwelcome disease especially if we take some time to care and help Crissa Marie Nacionales, Child Life Coordinator of KYTHE Psychosocial Care of Children in Hospitals at the Welcome Center 2/2 Davao Medical Center, J.P.
