Scorsese new film leads new releases at Gaisano Cinema
ACCLAIMED Martin Scorsese's latest mafia flick "The Departed" and the action-packed DOA: Dead or Alive lead the new movie releases at the Gaisano Mall of Davao. The new releases opened Wednesday.
The dog-injected horror The Breed and the action-comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang also compete. Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, the multi-award Philippine's entry in next year's Oscars, gets a re-run with better screen quality this week. First Day High will survive another week.
The Departed
Director Martin Scorsese takes on the 2002 Hong Kong hit film Infernal Affairs.
Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob run by gangland chief Costello (Jack Nicholson).
While Billy is quickly gaining Costello's confidence, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for Costello, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit.
Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy -- and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself.
The Breed
Two close brothers, Matt (Eric Lively) and John (Oliver Hudson) head to an exotic island for a week of fun and relaxation. Joined by Matt's girlfriend Nicki (Michelle Rodriguez), John's girlfriend Sara (Taryn Manning) and a friend Noah (Hill Harper), the group intend on having a week of relaxation, fun and spending quality time together.
However, after one of them is viciously attacked by a dog, the friends decide to leave the island early - only to find their plane wrecked.
As the day goes on, the friends find themselves fighting for their lives against a vicious pack of mutated dogs - hundreds of them, who don't intend on the group making it out alive off the island...
Doa: Dead Or Alive
The Transporter director Cory Yuen takes a no-fuss approach to get viewers straight to scenes that are just like that in his film version of the Tecmo's best-selling "Dead or Alive" videogame franchise.
Princess Kasumi (Devon Aoki) is ninja royalty to a loyal samurai clan located somewhere in the mistier regions of Japan.
Her brother Hayate (Collin Chou) has been missing, presumed dead, since not returning from a top secret, island-based martial arts tournament known as DOA:
Dead or Alive. Kasumi is invited to participate in the next DOA competition and accepts, hoping to find out what happened to her brother.
There she meets spirited pro-wrestler Tina (Jaime Pressley) and slinky thief and assassin Christie (Holly Valance).
The three girls bond over a love of HongKong wire-work, a common aversion to clothing and a curiosity about the true motives of tournament director Dr. Victor Donovan (Eric Roberts).
As DOA moves towards its final rounds, Kasumi, Tina and Christy are forced to fight both against and with each other.
Kiss King, Bang Bang
In LA, while escaping from the police after an unsuccessful robbery, the small time thief Harry Lockhart (Robert Downing Jr.) is accidentally submitted to an audition for a role of detective in a movie, and invited to a party.
He meets the homosexual private eye Gay Perry (Val Kilmer), who suggests him to participate of an investigation to develop his character. He also meets the gorgeous aspirant actress Harmony Faith Lane, and finds that she was a friend of his childhood for whom he had a crush.
The next day, Gay and Harry stake out a house where Gay is to take surreptitious photographs for a client - what they find is a corpse. From there, twists and connections abound and bodies pile up. Who's double-crossing whom? And, has Harry found Harmony too late to save himself from misery?
Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros
Maxi (Nathan Lopez) is youngest child of widower Paca (Soliman Cruz). Like nearly everyone in their Manila slum, Paca, moody Boy (Neil Ryan Sese) and antic middle son Bogs (Ping Medina) survive outside of the legal economic grid -- selling stolen cell phones, placing bets, etc.
Occasionally teased but mostly accepted as a girl in a boy's body, super-femme Maxi dropped out of school to be surrogate "wife," cooking, cleaning and fussing over everyone.
He's smitten with handsome rookie cop Victor (JR Valentin), who takes him under his wing -- platonically, though vibe is near-romantic at times.
When Boy kills a student during a bungled robbery, however, Maxi is caught between protecting his kin and Victor.
