Gomez loses fist match

LONE Filipino entry National Master John Paul Gomez suffered a heart-breaking loss via time forfeit against top seed Grandmaster Wang Yue of China at the start of 2006 World Junior Boys and Girls Chess Championship being held at the Petrosian Chess House in Yerevan, Armenia.

Gomez, due to severe time pressure with one minute on his clock, committed a big blunder on his 34th move, moving his knight from e6 square to f4 attacking the rook of his Chinese opponent in the d3 square.

The 19 years-old Wang who is rank No.2 in China with an Elo Fide rating of 2644, made a very strong counter moving his rook to d6 attacking the knight of Gomez in the b6 square and threatening a clear piece up in the next move.

The position was too hard for Gomez to save since his other knight in the f4 square was threaten to be capture by Bishop of Wang in the e3 square and also threaten the Knight of Gomez in the b6 square.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and Surigao del Sur representative Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. commented the heart-breaking loss of Gomez.

"Despite his loss, Gomez showed his tenacity and fighting spirit against his GM opponent, I have a very positive in him, I think he can recover in the next round," said Pichay.

Other notable winners in the initial round of the boys division were second seed GM Wang Hao of China, third seed GM Levan Pantsulaia of Georgia, fourth seed IM Nikita Vitiugov, fifth seed GM David Baramidze of Germany, seventh seed GM Yuriy Kryvoruchko of Ukraine, eight seed GM Daniel Stellwagen of the Netherlands, and 10th seed GM Jun Zhao of China, among others.

Hao trounced FM Homayoon Toufighi of Iran, Pantsulaia smashed David Kalashian of Armenia, Vitiugov nipped FM Sayed Javad Alavi of Iran, Baramidze took the measure of FM Andrey Gorovets of Belarus, Kryvoruchko beat IM Robert Andrew Hungaski of the USA, Stellwagen defeated Sergei Matsenko of Russia, and Zhao outplayed FM Stephen Jessel of Iran.
