On a comparative data production of major species released by Bfar-Southern Mindanao, tuna production reached 5,575 metric tons from January to June, this year.

Of the figure, 3,126.90 metric tons were produced traditionally, 2,246.40 were produced from the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) in Daliao Fish Port in Toril, while another 201.80 was from private landing centers.

The data is based on a report presented by the Bureau of Aquamarine Statistics-Southern Mindanao.

Bangus is second with 4,073 metric tons produced, seaweed with 1,032.10, and tilapia with 425.30 metric tons.

Bfar regional director George Campeon told Sun.Star that tuna also rank first in terms of total production in 2005.

The total production of tuna for 2005 reached 4,228.40 metric tons. More than half of these were produced traditionally with a total of 2,727.60 metric tons, 1,407.90 were generated from the PFDA, while only 92.90 metric tons were produced by the private landing centers.

"Tuna has the highest production last year, but the production of tuna this year is much higher compared last year," Campeon said.
