Agency sees no major billboard problem in city

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the region has seen no major problem on the proliferation of "dangerous" billboards in the city.

Instead, majority of those who violated the "road right of way" are squatters and sari-sari stores.

DPWH Regional Director Dimas Soguilon said that unlike in Metro Manila, huge billboards in the city that pose danger to lives and properties are minimal.

Soguilon said they are however still conducting inspections, along with the City Government, for structures that are within the road right of way and those outside that do not have the permits.

He said the minimal area for the road right of way is 20 meters from the center of the road.

Soguilon said any structures, except international road signs, should not be erected within it.

"So from the center, at least 10 meters on both side is our road right of way. And no structures should be erected within it," Soguilon said.

The joint team of DPWH and the City Government of Davao is set to come up with the list of structures that have violated the road right of way by October 15.

Soguilon said they expect the number of violators to reach more than a thousand including squatters and other small structures like sari-sari stores and vulcanizing shops built within the road right of way.

He said his men have already started giving out notices to the violators.

Soguilon said they will give ample time for the violators to demolish their own structures.

"If they won't demolish their structures, then we will demolish their structures in due time," Soguilon said. (BOT)
