Wednesday, October 11, 2006 It's Jaca's time to rumble
WITH the defeat of Glenn Donaire, all eyes will be on Jimrex Jaca as the attempts to become the next Filipino to become boxing superstar today after Manny Pacquiao.
Jaca, called `The Executioner,' fights dangerous Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico for the latter's interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight crown on October 21 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.
Jaca, who hails from Cebu, will be the clear underdog against Marquez, who engaged Pacquiao in a thrilling 12-round encounter in 2004.
Pacquiao floored Marquez three times in the first round in that bout, but survived the early onslaught and came back strong to salvage a draw.
Marquez is a known counter-puncher who, like an assassin, patiently waits for his opening to strike.
Jaca, a southpaw, is also a big puncher but just how much he learned from past fights will be known when he steps into the ring come fight night.
Marquez will carry into the fight a record of 45-3-1 with 34 KOs. The Mexican warrior is a former WBA and IBF featherweight champion with four successful defenses to his credit.
In August, Marquez added the interim WBO featherweight title to his resume when he stopped tough Terdsak Jandaeng in seven rounds.
The 23-year-old Jaca will enter the ring with a fight record of 27-2-1 with 12.
The Filipino boxer has won four of his last five bouts, including three by early knockout. (CRAM)
