P1B food complex pushed By Joy Romares-Sevilla
A FOOD Complex in Davao City, with an estimated cost of P1 billion, has been proposed by the Southern Philippines Construction Core Group (SPCCG) to be established in Daliao, Toril to further develop and promote industries with high growth potentials.
SPCCG, which comprises representatives from private sector partners, namely: the Davao City Local Government Unit, the National Development Company (NDC), and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), comes up with the plan to transform Davao Region as the food processing and consolidation center in Mindanao, as well as the shipment hub for domestic and export markets.
Ma. Belenda Ambi, chief of the Management Support Services Unit of DTI-11, said in last week's interview that they have a pending request addressed to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to allow the National Government to be partner of this local undertaking.
"What we want to have here is a food terminal, just like in Taguig, Metro Manila kasi we have an oversupply of agricultural products, so para ma-shelter lahat, kailangan natin ng isang lugar kagaya nito where we can find lahat," Ambi said.
"Mali-lengthen din natin ang pag-serve ng mga products natin to other countries if the plan will totally be developed," Ambi added.
She said the project needs at least P1 billion for the purchase of the property, construction of the building, off-site and in-site development of the area.
The area is about 24 hectares and this food terminal will be having an industrial estate where the food processing center, store facilities, allied service center, trading and commercial centers for the products can be located.
It will also have a technology and business incubation center where a food laboratory and other facilities like vacuum frying for fruits and vegetables and computerized fruit classifiers can be seen.
"The financing for the plan will only be local. Hindi tayo aasa sa foreign financing for this," Ambi said adding that as of now, they are still working out in conducting a feasibility study for the funding of the plan.
"We are targeting to finish the construction of the food terminal by 2010," Ambi said. (JGRS)
