2 'Pentagon men' slain, Cafgu member injured

TWO men alleged to be members of the Pentagon kidnap-for-ransom group died while a member of the paramilitary Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) was injured in a gun battle between the criminals and soldiers at Sultan sa Barongis in Maguindanao province Monday.

A report from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) placed the gun battle at 5 a.m. Monday while members of the 16th Maguindanao Company in Sultan sa Barongis were patrolling an area around the Liguasan Marsh.

The soldiers said there were at least ten Pentagon members who fought it out with them for around 20 minutes.

The Pentagon group retreated when reinforcements arrived for the soldiers.

The two slain Pentagon members remain unidentified. Recovered from the bodies were one M14 and one M16 rifles and ammunition.

Meanwhile, Kahir Mandila, 31, the Cafgu member who was injured, is now stable.

Hot pursuit operations are still being conducted, the military said. (GF)
