In 2000, 575 cases were reported to the unit, rising to 782 and 722 in 2001 and 2002, respectively.

In 2003, there were 791 cases of abuse against women and children reported to same unit, 934 in 2004, which is the biggest so far, and 893 cases in 2005.

Of the total figure, 2,174 are physical and emotional abuses, followed by 838 cases of sexual abuse against young girls.

While more cases of abuse were reported in 2004, the following year has the most number of sexual abuse cases against children at 166.

All reported cases were handled by DMC-WCPU, which was established in 1990's.

The unit is fully equipped, through the assistance of UNICEF and the local government, with a playroom for therapy sessions, which doubles as an interview room for children survivors as well as providing complete medico-legal services.

The unit also arranges temporary shelter for women and children who are victims of abuses. (GLP)
