Sunday, October 22, 2006 David vows to rule World Pool Juniors
UPRISING Renemar "Revo" David, the country's representative to the World Junior 9-Ball Championship, believes he has a decent chance to rule the annual competition slated on November 13 to 17 at the Rooty Hill RSL Club in Sydney, Australia.
The 16-year-old cue artist will be the first Filipino to compete in the tournament for the top Under-19 players in the world.
"I'll do my best to prove to the world that Filipinos are the best in billiards in whatever level," David said in Filipino.
His preparation for the tournament got a shot in the arm when Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William ""Butch" Ramirez pledged support to his campaign.
"We need to support young players like David. We all know we have a big chance to win in billiards. It was proven by world pool champions Efren Reyes and Alex Pagulayan," Ramirez said.
David, who was accompanied by pal and fellow teen-aged pool sensation Mike "Tsoke" Takayama, gained a slot in the world competition after finishing 18th overall in the recent National Open organized by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP). He was the best-placed Under-19 player in the tournament.
David started to play pool at the age of 13 in his native Candon City, Ilocos Sur. He earned his stripes by playing money games in the local pool halls of his home province.
The first big break in his young career came when noted cue maker Edwin Reyes took him under his wings and entered him in the tournament of the BSCP.
Among his victims in the national tournament were Carlo Biado and Japan Open quarterfinalist Roel Esquillo.
