Chasing dreams
By Stella A. Estremera

AMITTEDLY, it sounds cheesy, but that's what Davao artists and their friends were doing when they decided to accept the invitation of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila to participate in "Tipon: Visualizing Spaces, Organizing Artists", a four-month exhibit by six artists's groups from all over the Philippines that ends in February 2007.

Thus last October 19, the Davao artists renewed ties with fellow artists and art enthusiasts as the exhibit was formally opened by no less than national artist Napoleon Abueva with Bangko Sentral Gov. Armando Tetangco Jr., Met Museum chair Joselito D.Y. Campos Jr., and Angie Valenzuela-Velasco.

Participating artists for Dafi are Carlota de Pio, Rogelito Cayas Jr., Rey Bollozos, George So, Abraham Garcia Jr., James Gonzales, Joseph Rom, Randy Adlawan, and Bryan Cabrera with guest artist Sumeril Casan.

Their participation was made possible through a grant from the National Council for Culture and the Arts and additional help from City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, City Councilors Mabel Sunga-Acosta and Leonardo R. Avila III, Rep. Prospero C. Nograles, Davao Light and Power Company, Sun.Star Davao, Lighthouse Communications Inc., Sunil Mansukhani, Dr. and Mrs. Willy Angbuete, Richard Go, James and Sally Hafner, Joseph Xavier L. Rom, Presentiacion So, and Caroline Galang Taoj.

Joining Dafi at Tipon are the Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (InK), Anti-Anting (Cavite), Luna (Cebu), and the Pampanga Arts Guild (Pampanga).

The Dafi's interactive artwork is made up of six rectangular pillars with windows and frames covered with paintings and drawings, which are lighted from the inside, emitting multicolored lights in the dimly lit area, and encouraging viewers to peer and poke.

It's interactive art at its best -- where the artists for the first time came up with a real group work designed for viewers to see, feel, and appreciate.
