Lower House to amend juvenile law in 2 months By Ben O. Tesiorna
THE House of Representatives could amend the controversial Juvenile Law in two months once Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte submits in writing the provisions he wants amended.
House Majority Leader Prospero Nograles made the assurance saying he would author the bill calling for the amendments of the law.
"Maybe in two months I can pass it in the House. We need to hurry because Congress will end sessions by February and come back in June 2007," Nograles said.
Duterte earlier criticized the Juvenile Law saying it is "encouraging" young criminals to do more crimes since they are now being protected by the said law.
He said he would not be surprised if summary executions against young criminals would rise because of this law.
Senator Kiko Pangilinan authored the Juvenile Law. Nograles said he would also give a copy of Duterte's amendment proposals to Pangilinan so he could author the same in the Senate.
"In that way we could fast track the amendments. Like I said, it can be done if the mayor wants it badly," Nograles said.
Even Malacañang has noted Duterte's stand against the Juvenile Law.For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Pampanga. For Bisaya stories from Davao. Click here. (November 5, 2006 issue) Write letter to the editor.Click here. Join the Sun.Star message board.Click here. |
