Total gun ban to start January
TO PREVENT an outbreak of violence in the 2007 election, the Philippine National Police (PNP) will be imposing a total gun ban from January to June, a police official said Thursday.
The election of local officials, lawmakers from the House of Representatives and the Senate is scheduled in May.
Chief Superintendent Arturo Cacdac, chief of the PNP Firearms and Explosives Division, said the gun ban would be in effect from January 14 until June 13, based on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution 7707.
The resolution prohibits "carrying or transporting firearms or other deadly weapons in public places, including any building, street, park, private vehicles, or public conveyance."
Nobody will be exempted from the gun ban -- even government and police officials -- unless permitted by the Comelec, said Cacdac.
Cacdac said although a gun owner would have a license and permit to carry firearms, he/she must also seek authorization documents from Comelec.
Violators will face criminal charges like illegal possession of firearms, Cacdac said. (PIA)For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Pampanga. For Bisaya stories from Davao. Click here. (November 5, 2006 issue) Write letter to the editor.Click here. Join the Sun.Star message board.Click here. |
