Sunday, November 12, 2006 Don't give in to communist rebels' demands
POLICE Regional Office-Southern Mindanao Director Ricardo Quinto said the government urges the business community to help its campaign by not giving in to the demands of the New People's Army (NPA).
Quinto also called on the business sector to immediately report on incidents of extortion to the Philippine National Police for quick response from law enforcers.
The security forces remain on top of the situation in protecting the economy and national security, alongside with the strong vigilance of the Filipinos.
In a study prepared by C. Virata & Associates, it was found out that peace and order problems have made investing in the Philippines expensive, because business contractors have to deal with higher insurance costs and, in many cases, revolutionary taxes from communist rebels.
To shore up investments, the focus is not only on the security side but also on clearing stumbling blocks such as red tape, graft and corruption and other concerns of business.
The Philippines is on the right track of transforming the country into an investment haven in the region and the positive assessments of credit rating agencies and other foreign firms will continue to be the strong point in luring the big bucks to the Philippines. (PIA)
