Cops have lead on mayor's killer
By Merlyn F. Velarde

THE Sarangani police now have an idea who could have masterminded the assassination of a town mayor in Sarangani Province, Saturday noon.

But they refused to give details pending further investigation.

In the meantime, Inspector Geronimo Dimayuga of the Maitum Police Office appealed for calm, saying they are doing their best to solve the crime.

Dimayuga said they already have a cartographic sketch of the gunman who killed Maitum town Mayor George Yabes on Saturday in front of South Cotabato 2 Electric Cooperative.

Yabes, 64, was on his third and final term as mayor. He left behind his wife Rosita and two children.

He opposed illegal logging activities in Maitum -- a stand that may have caused his life according to sources close to the slain mayor.

"We appeal to the public to be calm and that if they know of information that could help solve the case, they know where to find us," Dimayuga said.

Yabes during his term brought honor to the city through his campaign against illegal logging.

In May this year, police authorities arrested Belino Sumadang who claimed he was hired to kill Yabes by a certain Ambong for P200,000.

Sumadang, who was arrested while trying to enter the town's gym where the late mayor was heading the town's fiesta celebration, pointed to Maitum Vice Mayor Felix Reganit as the alleged mastermind in the assassination plot.

Reganit vehemently denied the allegation.
