Saturday, November 18, 2006 Fisheries production decreased by 9.97% By Joy Romares-Sevilla
BAD weather has adversely affected fisheries production output in Davao Region, which posted only a total of 1,579.9 metric tons in the third quarter of 2006.
The regional office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) revealed this stating that the production output is 9.97 percent lower than the same period last year.
Of the total production output, roughly 26 percent and 49 percent are contributed by commercial and municipal sub-sectors, respectively. The aquaculture, on the other hand, shared 25 percent.
"The decrease in fisheries production for this quarter is attributed to bad weather we are always experiencing. Siyempre, hindi talaga magpapalaot ang mga fishers kung alanganin sila sa panahon," said George Campeon, regional director of Bfar.
A decrease of 25.63 percent is noted in the municipal fishery sub-sector.
Significant percent of increases, however, are observed in Compostela Valley Province and in Davao del Norte with 833.8 metric tons and 413.5 metric tons, respectively.
In 2005, a total of 685.5 metric tons in Compostela Valley and 371.7 metric tons of fishery products in Davao del Norte were produced.
Municipal fisheries produced a total of 7,021.7 metric tons for the third quarter of this year, while 9,441.7 metric tons was produced in the same quarter last year.
Meanwhile, commercial fisheries posted a 26.27 increase during the third quarter of 2006 compared to the same quarter last year. Significant percent increases are observed in Davao del Sur and in Davao City.
"Malaki ang itinaas ng production sa Davao del Sur, from 160.9 metric tons of the third quarter last year, it obtained 730.5 metric tons this year," Campeon said.
Production of aquatic resources from freshwater fishponds, on the other hand, increased by 50.97 percent, 3.04 percent increased was produced from the brackishwater fishponds, and 8.01 percent increase of seaweeds production.
