Maricel Soriano graces 'Yaya' premiere at Gaisano Cinema

DIAMOND Star Maricel Soriano will grace the premiere of her latest film, Inang Yaya, at Gaisano Mall of Davao Cinema 1 on Monday.

Inang Yaya is co-produced by Maricel with Tony Gloria of Unitel, which in its very short years in the business, already produced a number of worthy and award-winning movies such as Crying Ladies, Santa Santita and La Visa Loca (which gave actor Robin Padilla a string of best-actor trophies).

Directed by Pablo Biglang-awa Jr. and Veronica Velasco, Maricel plays Norma, an all-around helper in the home of young upper middle-class couple played by Zoren Legaspi and Sunshine Cruz. Her main responsibility, however, is to play nanny to her young ward, Louise (played by Erika Oreta).

What makes Maricel different from the ordinary yaya is that she's also a mother. Although she loves her daughter Ruby (Tala Santos) so much, she has no choice but to leave her child under the care of her grandmother (Marita Zobel). She has to do this because she needs the money she earns as a yaya.

But a problem arises when Norma's mom died. She had no choice but to bring Ruby to live with her. The parents of Louise were kind enough to have mother and daughter stay with them. They know how vulnerable their daughter Louise is without her yaya. Caught between the two girls, it was a struggle for the yaya to try her best not to favor one over the other.

Further, Louise's family plans to migrate to the US and asks her to go with them. But this means leaving Ruby behind.

"Honestly, I didn't realize how important the role of a yaya is until I did this movie. She's practically more of a mother to the child, especially if the mom is truly busy with her work," shares Maricel.

She adds, "Kaya, I really want to thank the yaya of my two children (Marron and Tiem) not just for looking after them, but, more especially, for guiding them to be the young men that they are now. They are such nice boys."

Rated A by the Cinema Evaluation Board, this excellent film is a simple yet powerful tearjerker that is never cloying.

Inang Yaya's regular show at Gaisano Mall Cinema is on November 29.
