Councilor calls for support of lumads' organic zone

COUNCILOR Leonardo Avila III urged the Davao City Council and the general public to support the Bagobo-Tagabawas of Sibulan who have declared their land as an "organic zone," disallowing chemical farming in their area.

Avila during the council's regular session said the Bagobos have deep respect for their land and this make them perfect stewards of creation thus, their aim to preserve the area by banning the use of chemicals in agriculture should be taken heed and supported.

He said this is not just for the benefit of the tribe but also of all Dabawenyos since they will be now provided with food that is free from chemical contamination, adding that such is healthy.

Avila said the right of the Bagobo-Tagabawas to self-determination should be held in utmost respect, as he is one with them in their call.

He added that he has already referred the matter of the declaration of Sibulan as an "organic zone" to the proper committee -- Food and Agriculture, which is headed by Councilor Conrado Baluran.

Avila also said that they will be trying their best to grant the Bagobo-Tagabawas people's request in the City Council and make it binding with the city as a whole. (GLP)
