Mayor asks agency to identify fly-by-night insurance firms

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte asked the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to furnish him a copy of bonafide insurance companies accredited by their agency.

The request came after myriad complaints from motorists who fall victim to fly-by-night insurance firms who do not pay them in times of accidents.

In his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" Sunday, Duterte told LTO officials to blacklist insurance companies who are proven to have not paid their clients the benefits due them.

The mayor warned that if the LTO-Southern Mindanao would not make any action on the matter then he will personally bring the problem to the attention of their superiors.

"Kindly review and evaluate the standing of these insurance companies otherwise I will be complaining to the superiors," Duterte said.

He also warned insurance firms of their usual practice of asking their customers to sign an affidavit of desistance even when still confined at the hospital. Duterte said such a practice is a "very obnoxious habit."

Duterte is planning to set up a desk at the City Legal Office specifically for complaints against insurance companies.

He said the City Government will assist Dabawenyos in running against these unscrupulous companies. "Do you know that what you are doing is an outright swindling?" Duterte said. (BOT)
