Islamic Bank back
By Grace L. Plata

THE state-owned Al-Amanah Islamic Bank is back in business in Davao City, said Ali Sangki, newly appointed chair of the bank.

Sangki paid a courtesy call to the Davao City Council during its regular session Tuesday.

Sangki, a former board member of the province of Maguindanao, was handpicked by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to lead the operation of the first and only Islamic bank in Asia.

Sangki said they have resumed banking services, including those in accordance to the Islamic banking system under the Islamic commercial law.

Councilor Jimmy Dureza Tuesday said that Sangki's visit to the council was to inform the local government that they are operating again and to ask whether the city would entrust its money with the bank as it had done so in the past.

The city is one of bank's former depositors before it ceased operations.

Dureza said the rehabilitation of the bank will be beneficial not only to the city's economy and development but to Mindanao as a whole since there are Islamic institutions abroad who have committed to send financial assistance to Muslim-dominated communities, extending more livelihood programs.
