Wednesday, November 29, 2006 Dimakiling leaves for Doha
INTERNATIONAL Master Oliver Dimakiling, who will mentor the national chess team to the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, left for the meet Tuesday afternoon via Qatar Airways.
Dimakiling, in text messages to Sun.Star Davao, said: "I think we'll have a stopover in Bangkok, Thailand. The trip might take us six to eight hours."
Dimakiling, who is from Davao City and a former De La Salle University (DLSU) standout, will act as coach to fellow IM's Darwin Laylo and Ronald Dableo and RP's lone female entry Jedara Docena in the quadrennial meet.
Laylo and Dableo will continue to hunt for Grandmaster norms in the Games.
When asked about his own GM title hunt, Dimakiling joked: "Change career na ako, coaching napud (I made a career move. I'm into coaching now)."
The Dabawenyo, however, said his coaching services will serve as a rest from the series of campaigns that went through here and abroad.
"Mao gani nakapahulay ko gamay karon kay paghuman sa Doha, mag-campaign napud ko ug usab (I'll rest for awhile because I will campaign again after the Doha Games)," he said.
Dimalkiling is a silver medal winner in the Manila Southeast Asian Games last year. (MLSA)
