Execs attend workshop to develop human resources
By Grace L. Plata

THE City Government of Davao City has taken part in an Institution Profiling Workshop to identify areas in the city's human resources pool that need to be developed.

The workshop, held in the city and sponsored and facilitated by the Philippine-Australian Human Resource Development, aims to better the capabilities of department heads and those in key positions in government, business and academic institutions.

City Administrator Wendel Avisado said that since Davao is eyed by the Australian government as a strategic partner in development, it is necessary to train employees of the city, equip, and capacitate them to run programs and projects especially those pertaining to business and governance. This is to ensure that the public gets the efficient service it deserves.

Avisado said that though Davao City is named the most competitive city in the south, it lags behind other cities in terms of human resource capability, according to the indicators identified by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) and Asian Institute of Management.

City Human Resource Department head Marcelino Escalada Jr., who was with Avisado in the workshop, said the process of profiling is made easier by templates or ready-made questions and tables that they have to answer and/or fill-in.

The answers/information will be submitted to the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAid) board for evaluation.

The board determines under which classification -- A, B or S -- a particular agency falls, each class with a corresponding aid/intervention, financial or otherwise from AusAid.

Escalada said that since Davao City passed class S, which called for urgent and immediate training intervention last year, they are aiming for class A, a comprehensive training grant that will also include class B benefits of long-term trainings and scholarships, which are all free of charge.

Participating agencies of the said workshop include the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mindanao Economic Development Council, Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao and local government units of the provinces of Bohol, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental.
