Gays hit songs scorning gays

THE gay community in Davao City condemned the proliferation of songs and themes that jeer at homosexuals.

Roy Diaz of Iwag Dabaw, an organization of male homosexuals based in Davao City, said in a telephone interview that a particular rap song entitled "Bayot Joya" (Bayot Siya [He is gay]), was aired over a local radio station and a song to the tune of Meteor Garden hit "Ni Hiao De Ai" allegedly from Cebu has caused outrage among homosexuals for the songs portray them in the least flattering manner.

According to Diaz, they do not appreciate being made the butt of jokes and being made to appear as unproductive members of the society, adding that the ones who produced these songs are gender-insensitive.

Diaz cleared that they are not against the molding of local talents especially that of the youth provided they do no insult anybody.

He added that the youth should call their peers to positive action through music, not injure a sector for means of popularity and commercialism.

Diaz said they have tried to contact the local radio station that have been airing the song in efforts to get them to stop, but the station allegedly pushed aside their complaints saying they are just supporting local acts.

But the gay community is not known for giving up. Diaz said this is just the first of their efforts to get people to listen.

Diaz said they will bring their protests to the Integrated Gender and Development Division under the Office of the City Mayor to coordinate with them on possible actions that will stop the airing and proliferation of these offensive themes. (GLP)
