Saturday, December 02, 2006 DA to boost coffee production in Region 11
AT LEAST 14 new areas for coffee plantation in four provinces in Davao Region have been developed by the regional office of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
These plantations are located in Kapalong, Talaingod, Sto, Tomas, and Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte; Bansalan, Digos City, Malita, and Sta. Maria in Davao del Sur province; Maragusan, Montevista, Nabunturan, and Laak in Compostela Valley Province; and Tarragona and San Isidro in Davao Oriental.
The DA report showed that a total of 383.93 hectares have been developed to supply coffee demands of at least 14 coffee plants in the region for coffee products.
Of the total land area, Compostela Valley has the largest area being developed at 243.25 hectares.
Meanwhile, a total of 86.20 hectares had been developed in Davao del Norte, 45.98 hectares and 8.50 hectares in Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental, respectively.
The DA-11 has not yet to identify a suitable area to be developed for coffee plantation in Davao City.
But the agency has already indicated new plantations of high value commercial crops like mango, durian, and banana in the city. (JGRS)
