Saturday, December 09, 2006 The entertainment scene of Davao By RG Alama Durian Jam
MADAYAW! Welcome to the first print article of Durian jam the entertainment scene of Davao. From a 30-minute TV show at Skycable channel 28 to a segment at Muzika del Sur.
The show that features the dynamic entertainment scene of Davao City expands to the print medium with this weekly column only here at Sun.Star Davao.
The column will be dedicated about the growing entertainment scene here in this part of Mindanao.
Davao used to be pretty laidback when I was growing up, especially in the 80's and in the 90's but with the coming of the new century, new nightspots coupled with the offshoot of digital technology and an increasing populace of talented people has revolutionized Davao into a boiling pot of creative renaissance.
For example, local bands and other musicians have taken steps to record their own songs and produced their albums inside the confines of homes. Thanks to those recording software, our PCs can, and have now become the digital instrument for our own musical expression.
Inside my CD case, contain some CDs from local groups like Foursidedcircle, Lizard Chips, Gaucho and the Thavawenyoz, listening to their works would thrill any listener with the endless potentials of their artistry.
And for exposure, the city's various nightspots (MTS, Venue, Damosa Gateway, Rizal promenade, Wheels and More Drive, Jack's Ridge, among others) have establishments that have held and accommodated events like concerts and gigs that featured these promising artists.
Music-oriented organizations like Kaiban and the Redcap productions have also organized events participated by our local indie groups.
As for digital audio-video technology, the advent of digital films has provided another outlet for our artists to showcase our innate creativity. Bands like Go Larry Go and Back by Midnite have produced their music videos while musicians like Macky Serapio of Malaya and Foursidedcircle have dabbled in digital films as a musical scorer, recently he was nominated for musical scoring in the recent ABS CBN's Cinema one Originals for his work in Huling Balyan ng Buhi, which recently won the best picture plum (more on this in my next column).
Being in an artistic cauldron, it would be a fatal omission to miss out these guys and girls who would make us proud. That is why we salute the team at the Alchemy of Vision and Lights Film and TV productions led by Dax Canedo for producing the 30-minute music magazine show Muzika del Sur.
Premiered last June 2006 in six Mindanao cities (Davao, Digos, Cagayan de Oro, Tagum, General Santos) Muzika del Sur or MDS for brevity have showcased the best of Mindanao music. With hosts Carlos Castano and Vanessa Yap, MDS has trekked the various musical genres (from ethnic to alternative rock to Dabawenyo hip-hop) in the past half-season providing us an interesting fare on our cable television.
With the coming year MDS will undergo a major overhaul with the show currently looking for a new batch of fresh-looking faces to host the MDS. And according to the show's producers, the search for the new MDS VJs will be innovative and fun. So if you got what it takes to become the new MDS VJs, you can drop in at the Alchemy of Vision and Light studios at the 59-B Aala bldg. Anda St., or call (082) 221-4599. And If you want to promote your band, works, gigs, films, parties, events etc. etc. Durian jam is open to help you. Just email me at rudolphian@yahoo.com.
