Saturday, December 09, 2006 Ombudsman explains 'secrecy' of ongoing probes
THE Office of the Ombudsman for Mindanao stands by its mandate to investigate cases filed against those in public service, but unlike other investigation agencies it is more difficult to weed out information from the agency regarding ongoing investigations.
Ombudsman for Mindanao Director Maria Corazon Alarcon said this is because they have to protect the dignity of the respondents.
"Our cases here are still under investigation and it would be unfair to publish this if we are not sure if such was really committed," Alarcon said.
Alarcon further said that information on cases pending investigation will also not be divulged unless with the consent of the respondents.
"The complainants themselves were the ones who give information on those cases published. It is not us who give information. We have not divulged any information since without the approval of the parties concerned," Alarcon added.
But Alarcon said they could give information once the investigation is done.
"Also, the case should be specific," she added. (RMH)
