MT, priority area in ICT development

THE MTC Academy, the country's first and largest Technical Education Skills and Development Assistance (Tesda)-registered medical transcription school, admitted that MT industry is among the priority areas in Information and Technology (ICT) development.

MTCA said the availability of medical transcriptionist in the US is falling at 10 percent per year. MTs are very much in demand in the US and Canada.

Ryan Herrera, marketing manager of MTCA-Manila, said that even the Philippines has a severe shortage of MTs -- the reason it was given such utmost concern.

"Hindi pa enough ang qualified medical transcriptionists natin dito," Herrera said.

The Philippines is seen as the next "destination of choice" for medical transcription.

Meanwhile, Herrera himself admitted that a lot Filipinos could express himself through writing than speaking.

He said this is basically the reason why only few applicants can be hired as call center agents.

"Ang call center agent kasi talagang kailangan pang maging proficient sa oral English language, most of the Filipinos kasi 'pag may kausap na kano, nai-intimidate magsalita, whereas kung MT hindi na kailangan magsalita, makikinig ka lang," Herrera said. (JGRS)
