BAS data show from 216,000 metric tons in the year 2000, production went up to 316,000 metric tons as of last year. The increase, BAS said, was attributed to the sustained high demand for rubber that motivated major producing provinces of North Cotabato, Zamboanga del Norte, and Sibugay to produce more.
The Department of Agriculture, on the other hand, earlier reported a total of 196.5 hectares expansion of rubber plantation as of October this year in at least three provinces in Davao Region namely: Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, and Compostela Valley.
Monkayo, Laak and Montevista were identified as new sources of rubber in Compostela, Sta. Maria and Digos City in Davao del Sur, and San Isidro in Davao Oriental.
Of all the municipalities, Laak was noted to have the largest area expanded with a total of 103 hectares. Sta. Maria, on the other hand, has the smallest with only one hectare expanded.
Compostela Valley also posted the largest rubber plantation identified with 185 hectares, 8.5 hectares was identified in Davao Oriental, while three hectares in Davao del Sur.For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Zamboanga.
