Deadline for registration of new voters on Dec. 31
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE Commission on Elections has set December 31 as the last day for registration of new voters.

This is based on Resolution 7707 signed by Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos and Commissioners Resurrecion Borra, Florntino Tuason, Romeo Brawner, Rene Sarmiento, and Nicodemo Ferrer.

A Comelec staff said they expect an influx of new registrants with classes about to end for the holiday season.

Meanwhile, Comelec 11 has procured additional equipment to hasten the registration process.

New voters registration is being done at the office of the election officer in all three districts located at Magsaysay Park from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m., from Sundays to Thursdays.

The resolution showed the election period starts on January 14.

Comelec has drafted several prohibitions to ensure clean and credible midterm elections on May 2007. Some of these prohibitions include: suspension of elected officials; transfer of officers and employees in the civil service; and use of security personnel or bodyguard by candidates.

January 15 is the start of the filing of candidacy for senators, party-lists representatives, and local officials.

February 13 would be the start of the campaign period for the senators and party-lists.

At the start of the campaign period, candidates are not allowed to give out donations and gifts, use of armored vehicles, and appointment or use of special policemen and agents.

March 30 was set as the start of the campaign period for local officials and candidates for the House of Representatives. It is also the start of prohibiting candidates form appointing or hiring new employees, construction of public works, and releasing of public funds.

The elections are slated on May 14, 2007.
