A night that celebrated the youth of Davao City, as they showcased their best in chorale singing, dance sport exhibitions, and drama.
The Centennial Park along San Pedro street was filled with members of youth organizations and students from the different universities and schools in the city as the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation of Davao City hosted the grand opening of the "Linggo ng Kabataan 2006," aptly dubbed as "Lihok Kabataang Dabawenyo."
"The event aims to provide an avenue for the youth of Davao to be able to express themselves, and further develop their potentials, and also for us to be able to gather together," said City Councilor April Marie Dayap, SK Federation president.
"We also want to awaken the youth of Davao into acting for the betterment of our society, we want to motivate them into aiming to do great things," she added.
One of the highlights of the event was the recognition given to the outstanding students of the city.
Sixty students from the various private, public, and state universities were the recipients of the awards. The awardees were endorsed by their respective schools and underwent a screening committee.
"We want these students to be examples and inspiration to our fellow youth," Dayap said.
Prior to the grand launching Friday, the SK Federation has conducted a series of activities since the last week of November.
Jumpstarting with a dancesport clinic in the various barangays, it was followed by a "Libreng Gupit" program that was held simultaneously all over the city.
The SK Federation also sponsored a Job Fair at the lobby of the City Council.
The series of events will continue Monday with a Leader's Convergence Seminar at the SM Entertainment Plaza.
To culminate the event, the SK Fed will have a gift giving at the Ma-a City Jail on December 19, together with the Ateneo de Davao Legal Advocacy Work.
Dayap said the events they have conducted so far were overwhelming success.
"The schools and youth organizations that we tapped to participate in the events gave immense support and were very cooperative" Dayap said.
