The city's population is distributed in 180 barangays across the three congressional districts.

Buhangin is the most densely populated among the barangays in the city. Its population comprises an estimated six percent of the city's population.

More than 40 percent of the population belongs to the 10 to 30 years old age group, which has a literacy rate of 97 percent.

Females lead the literacy rate with 97.57 percent while males have a 96.71 percent literacy rate for the same age group.

The year 2000 census shows that the city had a population of about 1.1 million with an annual growth of 2.83 percent. The average household size in Davao City is at about 4.77 persons per household.

Digos City comes in a close second with an annual population growth rate of 2.5 percent, while Mati comes in third with only 1.64 percent.
