Wednesday, January 03, 2007 Deaths rise 100% after Christmas By Grace L. Plata
REGISTERED deaths in Davao City doubled in the three-day period right after Christmas Day, most of which are due to cardiovascular arrest.
According to Allan Peralta, acting head of the legal instrument, court decrees and death registration division of the Local Civil Registrar's Office, average deaths registered per day in 2006 was between 40 to 50.
This figure jumped to more than a hundred per day on December 26 to 28. Highest registered number of deaths was on December 27 with 153.
A total of 8,223 deaths were registered in 2006, mostly due to cardiovascular arrest.
But Peralta added that five to 10 percent of the dead persons were transients, those that do not reside in Davao City and may have been here just for vacation or for medical services.
One other major cause of deaths in the city is summary killings, while infant mortality is at a minimum.
On the other hand, there were 38,450 births registered for the whole of 2006.
According to Shirly Arendain, registration officer II, it is 1,750 births higher than 2005's count of 36,700.
October 2006 tops the monthly count at 3,680. November comes in at second with 3,600 births, while April has the lowest count of 2,590 registered births.
Arendain said the Davao Medical Center, where most women in Davao City avail of natal services, sends over 300 to 400 registration applications per week.
