Wednesday, January 10, 2007 Sugarcane production up 49 percent
THE volume of sugarcane production in Davao Region went up by almost 50 percent, based on the latest production survey conducted by the regional office of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS).
Data taken from BAS showed that sugarcane produced in Davao Region as of the second quarter of 2006 reached to 429,074.30 metric tons, 49.17 percent higher than the same period last year, which was placed at 287,650.05 metric tons.
A significant increase was observed in the province of Davao del Sur. A 49.21 percent increase in the sugarcane production in the province was noted from 287,423.09 metric tons last year to 428,872.42 metric tons this year.
On the other hand, a decrease of about 18.92 percent in sugarcane production was posted in Compostela Valley. It produced a total of 140.78 metric tons in the second quarter of 2006 as compared to 173.63 metric tons in the same quarter of 2005.
In Davao del Norte, production increased with 58.54 metric tons of sugarcane, 15.15 percent higher than the same period last year, which was pegged at 50.84 metric tons.
However, Davao Oriental produced 2.52 metric tons of sugarcane.
Davao City, as BAS record shows, is not producing sugarcane among the five provinces in the Davao Region. (JGRS)
