Corteza, Valle crash out

EFREN "Bata" Reyes and Rodolfo Luat of the Philippines remain in contention for the title by surviving 11 rounds of the 2007 Derby City Classic Banks event at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.

But Lee Vann Corteza and Gandy Valle, both from Davao City, were booted out early in Rounds 5 and 4, respectively, in the 470-man field.

Reyes beat Michael Collins while Luat disposed of John Brumback in the 11th round. Also off to a title hunt is Steve More, who overcame Rafael Martinez Chavez.

Reyes, Luat and Moore, according to AZBilliards.com, still have hopes in winning the event after taking an early lead in the Master of the Table competition.
Reyes, however, is the only player with available buyback.

Round 12 will pit Reyes against Moore, while Luat drew a bye.

Corteza, the reigning All-Japan Open champion, bowed to Harry Platis in the fifth round to end his stint in the Banks event while Valle was subdued by George Breedlove in the fourth round.

Corteza earlier defeated Jamie Farrell, Martin Rimlinger, Adam Haines and Steve Parlow.

In the 416-man one-pocket division, Corteza lost his opening match against Joey Aguzin and also succumbed to Ken Kerekes.

Reyes pulled off a victory over Daryl Gable while Alex Pagulayan bowed to Jack Fernandez.

Jose Parica crushed Jim White, Santos Sambajon stunned Buddy Hall, Francisco "Django" Bustamante downed Chris Szuter and Luat overwhelmed Steve Titus.
Parica, Dennis Orcollo and Bustamante will be featured in the TV table for the ring game event along with Jonny Archer and Corey Deuel. (MLSA)
