Wednesday, January 10, 2007 NCFP sees Grandmaster, International masters involve in game fixing
A RANKING National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) official bared yesterday that what the association currently investigating is actually more than a simple case of game fixing but a large-scale syndicated one.
NCFP Executive Director Samuel Estimo said that the group they are looking into, which includes one grandmaster, two international masters, two national masters, one unrated player, and a lady woodpusher, are conniving with each other to ensure one of them would win the tournament.
"They would then divide all the prize money they would get," he added.
"The appropriate term for it should be "networking," kung saan bago pa man magsimula 'yung tournament nag-uusap-usap na 'yung grupo na kung sino sa kanila ang makakaangat sa mga unang round ay siya 'yung tutulungang manalo," Estimo explained.
According to the former NCFP secretary general, game-fixing has long been practiced in chess that even world-class players like the Russians do it.
But he said networking is a much worse wrongdoing as it fixed the tournament right from the start.
