Monday, January 15, 2007 Fisheries bureau sets mission to Malaysia next week By Joy Romares-Sevilla
A TEAM of regional officials of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) are scheduled to visit seaweed-processing plants in Malaysia to inspect the viability of the market and potential income of seaweeds produced by the country.
The team -- composed of Bfar-11 regional director George Campeon, Bfar-9 director Virgilio Alforque, Bfar Armm director Keise Usman, a representative from the private sector of Tawi-Tawi, Bfar 11 Eaga point person, and some officials of the DTI from Armm and from Region 9 -- will embark on a six-day visit to Tawau, Samporna, and Sabah, starting January 22 until January 27.
Bfar said they will also invite local seaweed processors to attend the activity.
Campeon earlier vowed to initiate efforts to promote and develop seaweed industry this year since it is one of the priorities of the agency aside from bangus and tilapia.
He said they will be expecting that Tawi-tawi and Malaysia will be treated as Bimp-seaweed areas.
