FOUR agricultural researches were conducted by the Crop Research and Development Unit (CRDU) of the Fiber Industry Development Authority (Fida) regional office in 2006.
These researches focused on collection, evaluation and characterization of abaca in Region 11; the collection, establishment and maintenance of Germplasm for mulberry; the determination of consumptive use of selected fiber crops; and the abaca national yield trial research.
The research on the collection, evaluation and characterization of abaca was presented during the National Fida In-House Review last year as an ongoing study. CRDU has collected additional eight varieties of abaca in Davao Region.
Research on determination of consumptive use of selected fiber crops was also presented during bthe Fida National In-House Review.
Meanwhile, the study on the collection, establishment and maintenance of germplasm for mulberry was conducted to determine the adaptation of various mulberry varieties with agroclimatic condition of the region.
There were 15 varieties of mulberry identified by the CRDU for the year -- Philippine variety, Taiwan unlobe, Taiwan lobe, India, Jinglone, Thailand, Batac, C-6, Native, CRR, Alfonso, Brazil, F1 Hybrid, Mysore and UPLB Native.
The abaca national yield trial is a component of the Fida project dubbed as the Identification of High Yielding Abaca varieties. The study was established at Nueva Visayas, Mawab in Compostela Valley.
