Friday, January 19, 2007 Hospital Special on Emergency this Friday
GMA Network's Emergency, hosted by veteran broadcast journalist Arnold Clavio, takes a look at the present condition of some of the country's hospitals this Friday.
When typhoon Reming hit Bicol last November, not only did it take lives and destroy fields and livestock, it also left Albay's hospitals in shambles.
According to Bicol's Provincial Health Officer, five of the seven hospitals in the area were devastated by the typhoon. Many of the equipment are still submerged in water, and are no longer functional. Two of the hospitals still lack roofing. But despite the disaster, these hospitals strive to operate to serve the needy of Bicol.
Emergency will also check on a couple of hospitals in Palawan that are reported to be rendering substandard services to the provincial folk - Taytay District Hospital and Roxas Hospital.
Lastly, Emergency will feature Lanao del Sur's Tamparan District Hospital, which was established in 1963 after a cholera outbreak in Tamparan, Lanao del Sur by then Mayor Datu Palawan Disomimba. When the hospital was inherited by Dr. Potri Ali in 1997, it was in tatters - the roof leaked when it rained, water supply ran low and the restrooms reeked of odor.
Dr. Ali solicited help from various groups and doctors to renovate the hospital. Through his efforts, the hospital was able to collect sufficient supplies of medicine. And at present, it serves eleven municipalities in Lanao del Sur, one of the poorest provinces in the Philippines.
Catch all these this Friday night on Emergency, right after Saksi, on GMA.
