Friday, January 19, 2007 Health dep't plans to build P500-M cancer facility
IN ITS quest to better serve the Davao Region, the Department of Health (DOH)-Southern Mindanao mulls the construction of a multi-million facility to cater to the increasing number of cancer patients in the region.
DOH-Southern Mindanao director Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial said an estimated P500 million will be needed to initially build and operate the proposed facility.
The center, which will be built on a two-hectare lot right beside the Davao Regional Hospital in Tagum City, will have a hospice unit to house the patients, and a state-of-the-art medical facility.
With this, DOH-Southern Mindanao is planning for the Davao Regional Hospital to specialize in oncology, or in cancer treatment while the Davao Medical Center would focus more on the heart, lung, and kidney treatment of diseases.
As of the moment, the Davao Medical Center is catering to the cancer patients of the region.
It has admitted though that it does not have enough funds to sustain the treatment of the patients.
The recent scheme of the center is that they require the patients to purchase the medicines needed for chemotherapy.
Unfortunately, most patients are not capable of buying the drugs required for the treatment. (CPM)
