Monday, January 22, 2007 Duterte, Nograles forge unity ticket for May polls By Ben O. Tesiorna
IT'S confirmed. Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and House Majority Leader Prospero Nograles have forged a unity ticket in Davao City for the coming May elections.
In his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" Sunday, Duterte said he had an agreement with Nograles for them to have their own separate turfs.
"Ang sabot nami ni Boy (Nograles) nga dili siya manghilabot sa local, dili pud ko manghilabot sa national (My agreement with Boy is he will not get involved in the local selection and I will not also touch the national posts)," Duterte said.
"Kung kinsay pili-on nya sa national mao na to ang final, kung kinsa pud ang pili-on nako sa local mao na pud to final and official candidates sa among unity ticket (His choice for the national post will be final same as my choice for the local posts will also be the final and official candidates of the unity ticket)," he added.
The mayor said though that as a sign of respect to Nograles's stature and influence, he will still consult the latter on candidates he will field in the first district.
Meanwhile, Duterte dismissed accusations that he was just being melodramatic when he made public his wish for his daughter, Sara, to run for public office as he is not getting any younger.
"Wala ko naga-drama, it's time for us to cultivate the leaders of the next generation," Duterte said.
On the issue of political dynasty, Duterte said there can never be a dynasty under a democratic form of government.
