AT LEAST 360,000 public vehicles in Davao Region have not been registered with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), posing dangers to commuters.
LTO-Southern Mindanao chief Gomer Dy said the figure represents 10 percent of the more than 3.6 million unregistered public utility vehicles all over the country.
Majority of these unregistered vehicles in Davao Region are motorcycles, which are primarily used as "pampasada."
Dy expressed concern over the impending danger brought by these unregistered vehicles, saying their safety cannot be assured by the agency.
He said it is only through the registration process that they are able to regulate vehicles used as public utility.
In a bid to further strengthen their collection, Dy said, they have initiated the Revenue Enhancement Project that aims to help the drivers register their vehicles with the LTO.
He is giving drivers and operators two weeks in order for them to register, although no actual date has been set.
Dy also said that LTO-Southern Mindanao is going to put a satellite office in Panabo City to accommodate registrants coming in neighboring provinces.
"There would be no need for them to go to Davao City to register," he said.
The LTO is tasked by the government in the registration of vehicles and in the issuance of driver's licenses. (CPM)
